Sustainability — Phinisi Cruise Bali’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

Our Philosophy: “Menjaga Warisan” — Guarding the Heritage

At Phinisi Cruise Bali, we believe that true luxury is inseparable from responsibility. The stunning natural beauty and rich cultural tapestry of the Indonesian archipelago are not just our business backdrop; they are a precious heritage—a ‘warisan’—that we have a profound duty to protect. Our sustainability policy is guided by this principle, focusing on tangible actions that preserve the environment and empower local communities for generations to come.

Environmental Commitments

We are dedicated to minimizing our ecological footprint and actively contributing to the conservation of Indonesia’s marine ecosystems.

  • Marine Conservation Partnerships: A portion of the revenue from every phinisi cruise charter is donated to our official conservation partners, including WWF Indonesia and the Komodo Survival Program. These funds support critical work in marine protected areas, coral reef restoration, and wildlife protection.
  • Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: We have a zero-tolerance policy for single-use plastics across our entire curated fleet. All vessels are equipped with water purification systems, and guests are provided with reusable bottles. All provisions are stored in non-plastic, reusable containers.
  • Comprehensive Waste Management: We enforce a strict ‘zero-discharge’ policy. All waste is sorted on board, compacted, and brought back to port for responsible disposal in designated facilities. We never dispose of anything in the sea.
  • Reef-Safe Practices: We provide all guests with complimentary, high-quality, reef-safe sunscreen. Our dive masters and guides are trained to enforce strict no-touch policies on all snorkeling and diving excursions to protect fragile coral ecosystems.
  • Carbon Offsetting: We are actively developing a partnership with a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified project, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, to offer our clients the ability to offset 100% of the carbon emissions from their charter’s fuel consumption.

Community & Social Commitments

Our commitment extends to the people who make these islands their home. We strive to create a positive and lasting impact on the local communities we visit.

  • Local Employment & Fair Wages: We contractually require our partner vessels to maintain a crew of at least 80% Indonesian nationals. We champion fair wages and ensure all crew are covered by BPJS, Indonesia’s national health and social security system.
  • Sourcing from Local Economies: Wherever possible, we source fresh produce, fish, and supplies from local markets and farmers in ports like Labuan Bajo and Sorong. This injects revenue directly into the local economy.
  • Authentic & Respectful Cultural Exchange: Our itineraries include opportunities for guests to visit local communities, such as the sea gypsy villages of Wakatobi or the ikat weavers of Flores. These visits are designed in collaboration with village elders to be respectful, non-intrusive, and economically beneficial, with guests encouraged to purchase crafts directly from the artisans.
  • Supporting Traditional Craftsmanship: The Phinisi itself is a product of incredible local craftsmanship. We honor this by working exclusively with vessels built by traditional Konjo boat builders in South Sulawesi and supporting initiatives that preserve these vital skills.

Our commitment to sustainability is not just a page on our website; it is a core criterion in Our Methodology for selecting vessel partners and a fundamental part of the Phinisi Cruise Bali experience.

Conscious Operations: Minimizing Our Footprint on the Waves

The scent of saltwater and polished teak wood fills the air as a traditional phinisi glides effortlessly over the cerulean waters, a testament not just to timeless craftsmanship but also to a profound commitment that extends far beyond the horizon. At Phinisi Cruise Bali, our dedication to environmental stewardship is woven into the very fabric of our daily operations, ensuring that every journey leaves only ripples, not a trace. We meticulously manage our resources and waste streams, striving for a near-zero impact on the delicate marine and terrestrial ecosystems we traverse.

A cornerstone of our operational sustainability is our aggressive approach to waste management. We have implemented a comprehensive strategy to eliminate single-use plastics across our fleet, targeting a 95% reduction by the end of 2024. This commitment manifests through providing guests with reusable water bottles, filtered water refill stations, and sourcing amenities in bulk, refillable containers. All organic waste is composted where possible, and non-organic refuse is rigorously segregated for responsible recycling or disposal in designated facilities on land, never at sea. Furthermore, our vessels are equipped with advanced wastewater treatment systems, ensuring that any discharge meets the highest international environmental standards, protecting the pristine waters that are home to an unparalleled diversity of marine life.

Beyond waste, energy and water conservation are paramount. Our phinisi vessels are designed to maximize natural ventilation and light, reducing the need for air conditioning and artificial illumination. We utilize energy-efficient LED lighting throughout and continuously explore renewable energy solutions, such as solar power for auxiliary systems. Water consumption is carefully monitored, with low-flow fixtures installed in all cabins and galleys, alongside efficient laundry practices. Our provisioning philosophy prioritizes local, seasonal produce and sustainably sourced seafood, supporting regional economies while significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with transport and refrigeration. This mindful approach ensures that the luxury of a phinisi cruise bali experience is never at the expense of the environment.

Empowering Communities: A Partnership for Prosperity and Preservation

True luxury, as we define it, extends beyond exceptional service and breathtaking vistas; it encompasses a profound respect for the people and cultures that define Indonesia. Our community engagement initiatives are built on principles of mutual respect and empowerment, fostering sustainable livelihoods and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the archipelago. We believe that by investing in local communities, we are not only enriching the lives of our neighbors but also safeguarding the very essence of the destinations our guests explore.

Our commitment to local empowerment begins with our crew. Over 80% of our onboard staff are Indonesian nationals, many hailing
